About Us

What is
SCAN?

SCAN has provided school-based child abuse awareness lessons to children in southeastern Wisconsin for more than 35 years at more than 90 public, private, and parochial schools. The goals are to educate children to recognize abusive situations and to understand that such incidents need to be disclosed right away to trusted adults in order to mitigate the detrimental effects. Above all, children need to know that abuse is never their fault.

SCAN lessons teach personal safety skills to children to diminish their risk of victimization. Children have the right to feel safe. Without a safe start, children are less likely to know success and the cycle of pain continues. Safe children grow up healthier, are more prepared to become successful learners and productive workers, and build positive relationships at home, with peers and within the community.

What people have said about SCAN:

SCAN works toward creating a world where all children grow up in safe environments free from abuse.

All of our programs teach children:

That they are all special and have a right to feel safe and be safe.

That there are safe and unsafe touches.

Abuse should not be kept a secret.

Abuse should be reported right away and until someone helps.

Abuse is never a child’s fault.
